The pool is teeming with people enjoying the hot summer day as the lifeguards sit watching. And in the rear, behind and rising above the lush green trees, is the historic Hell Gate Bridge as it spans New York's East River.

Astoria Pool is a very large city pool. It sits in Astoria Park at the edge of the East River. As a kid, I remember visiting Astoria Pool often, both with my family and then later just with friends. It was a fantastic time that I remember vividly. Even the long walk to the pool was often filled with adventure. We would get there early and leave at closing - a whole day at the pool. There were no cellphones then, no digital anything really. It was just a pure life experience.
