CENTRAL PARK BRIDLE PATH

by Laszlo Tar

Watercolor - 1965
Cat# 20001145/1965

Description

A winter view of the bridle path in historic Central Park. There is a lone horse person in the distance as if posing for Dad.

Of New York's hundreds of earlier stables, only one remains operational today: Claremont Riding Academy, established in 1892, is the oldest continuously operating stable in the United States.

Dad loved painting romantic winter scenes in Central Park, and he also loved all animals, especially horses and dogs - you'll find them sprinkled throughout his art.

Dad was 43 years old when he created this piece, and because he always painted on location, you can imagine him standing there with his easel set up in the slushy snow, making eye contact with the person on the horse. Maybe they were both surprised to see each other that day - we can only imagine. But imagine we can because this image lives on forever and has a unique beauty of life built into it.

The city skyline in the backdrop, the bare trees, and the snowy path create perspective and lead our eyes to the lone horse-person. It takes us right there, timelessly, where two people met - one an artist, the other a rider with his horse - on a cold, forever winter day at the Central Park Bridle Path. ❤️
