TODD SHIPYARD

by Laszlo Tar

Watercolor - 1962
Cat# 20001086/1962

Description

A view from Hoboken, New Jersey, along the Hudson River, with the Empire State Building in the backdrop and the old Todd Shipyard in the fore, with cargo train containers.

The history of Todd Shipyards nearly encompasses the breadth of shipbuilding in the United States, beginning with the Civil War. Once the largest independent shipbuilding company in the United States, Todd Shipyard was a noted builder of Naval and commercial vessels.

Dad traveled to Hoboken numerous times over the years because he loved the view of New York City from Hoboken. Back then, the Hoboken waterfront was largely industrial, with the old Maxwell House Coffee company, shipyards and other businesses who used the Hudson as a transport and distribution means for their products.

On this day, Dad was 40 years old and just six years prior, arrived in America with our family. He stood behind the shipyard with its train rails and large Todd Shipyard sign facing the Hudson river, the New York City skyline, and Empire State Building reaching for the stormy sky - and he nailed this unique and nostalgic forever work of art of Todd Shipyard.
