It was 1964. The city that never sleeps was alive with the promise of a new day. The East River flows gracefully, its sparkling waters reflecting the light of day. And in front of us is the historic Brooklyn Bridge, with the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges stretching out behind. A tugboat sits anchored, smokestacks billowing, beckoning to embark on a journey of discovery.
In 1964, we were a family of immigrants, entering the United States just eight years prior, struggling to make our way in a new land. But at this moment, my father stood there, basking in the romantic glow in his heart. You can sense that the beauty of the scene before him entranced his mind with creative excitement and inspiration. He knew this was exactly where he was meant to be.
And, what is so endlessly amazing to me is that Dad created all his works of art on location, right out there in the open. I am also sure that he became a daily icon of wonder, carrying his easel and art tools on the busy subways, streets, and parks of New York City - because he was out there so frequently.
So come, travel back in time to a romantic moment from long ago and far away, on the East River waterfront of New York City, with my father, Laszlo Tar, as your guide, as he reflects on his mood of promise and hope, in this perfect artistic view of the Tug by the Bridge. 💖
