Dad loved to paint and draw everyday life in historic Central Park and throughout New York City. He would often just sit on an opposite bench and capture the most basic human moments before him. On this day, he found these two gentlemen playing cards and even though it might be something any New Yorker would see, what's so perfect is that he somehow also captured the expressive intrigue of the moment.
The date of this work is 1962, just 6 years after we arrived in the United States (1956), and just a year or so after moving to New York City. During this period, Dad created numerous oil paintings, but our small apartment and the strong smell of oil paints forced him to transition to watercolors, which would soon become the basis of most of his painted works.
Little did these two fellows know that their game would become immortalized, as a moment captured forever, in the Card Players. ❤️
