This work by Dad, a still-life oil painting, captures a moment of simple, rustic elegance.

The scene is set on a well-worn wooden table, its rich brown tones providing a sturdy foundation for the items arranged upon it. Center stage is a plate holding three whole fish. The fish rest on a white linen napkin adorned with yellow stripes, its folds and creases adding a touch of texture to the composition.

To the left of the fish, two lemons, one whole and the other sliced in half, add a burst of vibrant yellow that echoes the napkin’s stripes. The small jug beside them, with its soft blue hue, contrasts gently with the warmer tones of the table and the bright citrus. This careful arrangement of everyday objects reflects Dad's ability to find beauty in the ordinary, elevating simple items to a subject of artistic reverence.

Dad’s artistic influences are evident in this piece. The expressive brushstrokes and rich, varied palette hint at the impressionistic and fauvist styles he admired. Artists like Matisse and Cezanne, with their bold use of color and form, can be felt in the vibrant yet harmonious composition. This painting, like much of his work, demonstrates his profound respect for the classical artists and his skill in blending their techniques with his unique vision.

Each element in the painting feels intentionally placed, yet there is a natural, effortless quality to the scene, as if it were an incidental snapshot of daily life. This blend of careful composition and spontaneous charm is a testament to Dad’s mastery and his deep appreciation for the beauty found in the simplicity of everyday moments.

This is one of Dad's early works, created in the United States, upon arrival in 1956.

In 1960, our family was very new to the United States, having arrived in Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, after escaping from Hungary during the revolt against Communism. The story of our escape is described in "The Moon & The Star".

On this day in 1960, Dad found inspiration in this setting, that surely became our family's Dinner.❤️

Through My Father's Eyes

I wrote the following song to memorialize the events depicting our escape.
