This piece, painted from Coindre Hall Park, captures a serene and lively scene on the north shore of Long Island, New York. The view extends from the back side of the Coindre Hall mansion, overlooking Huntington Harbor. On this early fall day, children are playing with their pet dogs on the lush green grass. To the left, large golden trees add a warm touch to the scene, contrasting beautifully with the cool blue-gray sky. At the water's edge stands a charming boathouse, and the harbor itself is dotted with various vessels, each contributing to the tranquil yet vibrant atmosphere of the painting.
Dad had a deep affection for painting Long Island's picturesque shores, particularly those along the north shore. For a time, he lived nearby, which allowed him to frequently visit and capture the beauty of Coindre Hall Park.
This park, spanning 33 acres, features an 80,000-square-foot mansion that overlooks Huntington Harbor. Built in 1912 for pharmaceutical magnate George McKesson Brown, the mansion epitomizes the grandeur of the Gold Coast era with its medieval turrets and sweeping harbor views.
In 1973, Suffolk County acquired the estate, recognizing its historical and architectural significance. By 1989, this splendid example of French chateau architecture was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and dedicated to the Suffolk County Historic Trust.
On this early fall day in 1999, Dad found this simply beautiful scene looking out onto Huntington Harbor with children and dogs at play at Coindre Hall Park. ❤️
