The vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes in this piece capture the essence of a bustling summer day on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy.
The scene is alive with movement and color, from the graceful gondola gliding through the shimmering water to the radiant facades of the buildings lining the canal. Each building, painted in varied pastel shades, reflects the unique character and history of this enchanting city. The small vessels docked on the opposite side and the striped poles add to the authenticity and charm of the scene.
Dad painted this work during a 5 month European art journey in the summer of 1977, a trip he embarked on alone. He visited several countries, including England, Italy, France, and the Netherlands.
The northeast view from the south side of the canal, just east of the rail station, provided the perfect vantage point to capture the magnificence of Venice. The building to the right, known as "Palazzo Labia a San Geremia," stands out with its distinct architecture, adding a historical touch to the lively scene.
Dad's expressionist, fauve, and impressionistic styles are evident in the way he brings the scene to life, with bold colors and fluid brushstrokes. This piece not only showcases his technical skill but also his deep admiration for the classical artists who inspired him.
Each stroke tells a story, inviting the viewer to step into the vibrant world of Venice and experience the beauty through his eyes.
On this particular day, Dad found himself captivated by the beauty and vibrancy of the Grand Canal and Gondola Traghetti.
