TOWER HOUSE (1989)

by Laszlo Tar

Watercolor - 1989
Cat# 20001092/1989

Description

The scene in this work captures a stormy summer day at Cold Spring Harbor, New York on Long Island.

The sky is alive with swirling gray and blue-gray clouds, hinting at the tempestuous weather. Dad renditions an old house, known to us as the Tower House (unofficial name), leaning backward, its reflection beautifully distorted on the water below. The water's surface is a canvas of ripples and light, where small boats rest peacefully, contrasting with the stormy sky above.

Cold Spring Harbor is a historic village in Huntington, New York, nestled on Long Island's north shore.

In the distance to the right, one can make out the buildings of the renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a place of scientific discovery and innovation. The harbor itself is dotted with romantic marine vessels, patiently awaiting their next voyage.

Dad lived just a short distance from this spot, and together we would explore the north shores of Long Island, seeking out scenes for him to paint. His artistic spirit was deeply influenced by classical artists such as Dufy, Picasso and Matisse. This influence is evident in his expressionist, impressionistic style, capturing not just the visual essence of a scene, but its emotional and atmospheric depth as well.

On this day in 1989, together we found and immortalized, Tower House. ❤️
