HALESITE CORNER

by Laszlo Tar

Watercolor - 1990
Cat# 0525093/1990

Description

This piece captures a lively winter day at a charming corner in Halesite, a historic community in north Huntington, Long Island, New York.

The deep gray sky looms overhead, casting a dramatic backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the vibrant colors of the buildings. Bare trees reach upwards, their branches stark against the cloudy sky. People stroll along the street, one walking a dog, while cars pass by, adding a sense of movement and everyday life to the scene.

The vibrant yellow of one house stands out brightly against the muted tones of the sky and the bare trees, while the nearby buildings add to the eclectic charm of this quaint neighborhood. Each brushstroke, each color choice, speaks to my father's profound appreciation for the beauty in everyday scenes. Through his art, he invites us to see the world through his eyes – a world where even the simplest corners of a town are filled with history, character, and life.

Dad, a formally trained classical artist, had a unique ability to infuse his works with an expressionist and impressionistic flair. He drew immense inspiration from renowned classical artists like Dufy and Picasso. This particular piece showcases his mastery in capturing the essence of a place, blending bold colors with dynamic brushstrokes to evoke a sense of warmth and familiarity despite the cold season.

Halesite Corner, as depicted here, held a special place in my father’s heart. He lived just a short walk away from this very spot. His viewpoint in the painting is from the old Marine Corps base, looking northeast towards the original Jeff's Seafood store.

On this day in 1990, Dad found this perfect view of Halesite Corner. ❤️
