Description
This work captures a vibrant scene within Central Park, in New York City, just by the 59th Street entrance. The pond reflects the surrounding greenery, with the stately buildings of 59th Street standing tall in the background, including the iconic Pierre Hotel with its patina-green roof. The dark tan of the buildings contrasts beautifully with the lush green trees and the serene pond. A U.S. flag waves proudly on a pole, adding a patriotic touch to the idyllic setting. People dot the grass and walk around the pond, bringing the scene to life. Above, the sky is a gentle light blue, framing the entire composition in a tranquil embrace.
From 1960 to 1969, our family called uptown Manhattan home, in a neighborhood known as Spanish Harlem. This was our first residence in the United States, made possible by the kindness of the American Red Cross and the Presbyterian Church of New Jersey. For us, Central Park was not just a park; it was a playground filled with endless possibilities. My father, in particular, found immense joy and inspiration in every corner of the park.
Dad's artistic style was a beautiful blend of expressionism and impressionism. His admiration for masters like Dufy, Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Degas, and Cezanne shone through in his work. Each brushstroke was a testament to his love for vivid colors and bold forms, much like the ones in this work. The scene is alive with his signature use of color and light, capturing the essence of Central Park in a way that feels both timeless and immediate.
Dad's paintings and drawings were not just images of scenes; they were windows into his soul, reflecting his emotions and experiences, and always messages about humanity.
On this day in 1964, Dad re-found a scene he had painted about one year earlier, but this time facing west, of 59th Street Pond. ❤️
