I often, especially in the summer, find myself gazing at my father's watercolor paintings of Venice, Italy.

This one is a view near the Scalzi Bridge, looking across the Grand Canal towards the train station. Gondolas float gently on the shimmering water, and the historic beauty of Venice comes alive in the soft, expressive colors that only Dad could capture.

Dad was a classically trained artist from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, Hungary. He had a special gift. His style was a vibrant blend of expressionism and Impressionism, full of bold colors and emotional depth. His art told stories, not just of places, but of his emotions, life perspectives, and moments in time.

In 1977, Dad first visited Venice on his own. Its breathtaking architecture, the pastel hues of the buildings, and the romance of the canals captivated him, and he created many paintings on that trip. After that, Venice, with its timeless charm, forever lived inside of him.

Years later, in 1995, I had the incredible opportunity to take Dad on another painting trip to Venice. It was just the two of us, exploring the city's wonders and sharing stories. That trip was one of the most memorable times of my life. I learned so much about my father—not just as an artist but also as a man who had lived through so much, yet remained enchanted by all the world’s beauty.

This painting, and all his others of Venice, are more than just mere works of art. They are a window into Dad's soul, a reflection of his love of Venice (and so many other places) and his enduring spirit. As I gaze at them all, I feel deep connections and the rich tapestry of our shared history.

On this day in 1977, Dad was near SCALZI.
