PITTSBURGH SKYLINE

by Laszlo Tar

Watercolor - 2007
Cat# 20001152/2007

Description

Dad's paintings of the Pittsburgh skyline and bridges hold a special place in my heart. He created this vibrant cityscape in 2007 at the remarkable age of 85, capturing the Golden Triangle's beauty from the vantage point of Mount Washington.

Those were hard years for our family, as Mom and Dad had moved to Pittsburgh briefly from 2006 to 2007 before Mom's tragic passing, after a long illness. My doctor-brother lived nearby with his family, and he would often take Dad on little excursions, leaving him for a few hours to paint. Occasionally, a few locals stopped by as he worked in his solitary creative bliss - his favorite way to work.

Dad would share how this Pittsburgh scene reminded him of his beloved Budapest, with the Danube River's sweeping curves and numerous bridges. As a Hungarian artist who fled Communist oppression with his family in 1956, finding peace in these American cityscapes meant so much. He poured his heart into every brushstroke.

Dad's artistic journey spanned over 90 years until his passing at 97.

While his Pittsburgh collection is understandably small given his short time there, each piece is a poignant memento that reminds us that Dad's dedication to his work was boundless.

The Golden Triangle will forever represent the reverence Dad held for his life's calling and the way his art captured the spirit of any place he called home.

On this day in 2007, Dad saw and felt the Pittsburgh Skyline.
