A nostalgic painting of the Dalzell Tugs docked at Battery Park and Pier 1 in downtown New York City.
The vessels, backdrop, water reflections, and workers on the dock truly bring the scene to life, immersing the viewer in the bustling activity of the old New York City waterfront.
As is typical of his other works, the level of detail Dad reflects is just right. As always, his emphasis is on composition.
Dad did not have any personal knowledge of these tugs, the specific dock, or their history. He just saw something beautiful and decided to paint it from his expressive heart. And he knew getting down the text of the vessels would be important to the viewer.
The Dalzell Tugs were powerful vessels used to transport tankers in and out of the city's harbors.
Special thanks go out to Mr. Dan Sullivan for helping us correctly identify the exact location of this work. Mr. Sullivan comes from a family of New York Harbor tugboat captains and, as a child, he often made trips aboard various tugboats of the Dalzell fleet, boarding the boats at this exact location, Pier 1. Right across the street is 17 Battery Place, one time office building that housed the many tugboat companies. The building in the background once housed the fire department who tied a fire boat up there. He came about this piece through his brother, who bought a signed print of this work. Mr. Sullivan is retired from 40+ years as a tugboat captain and pilot in the harbor.
On this day in 1964, Dad made friends with the Dalzell Tugs. ❤️
