SAN SIMEONE PICCOLO

by Laszlo Tar

Watercolor - 1977
Cat# 1358035/1977

Description

Dad created this piece in 1977.

That year, he traveled to England, France, Italy, and the Netherlands on a four-month solo painting voyage. Mom and I were home in NYC. I was eighteen.

The hot summer of '77 and Dad's painting journey always stick in my mind because it was the same year and time Elvis Presley passed away. It wasn't like I was a big fan of Elvis, but it was big news that summer, as was the big blackout in NYC.

So, Dad was wandering Europe, creating brilliant paintings, and it was Lights-out 💡 for Elvis and us in New York City. 🙏

San Simeone Piccolo sits across from the Santa Lucia railway station in Venice, Italy. This building is a concert hall with its design based partly on the Pantheon in Rome. Architect Giovani Antonio Scalfarotto designed this structure in 1739.

Years later, in 1995, I took Dad on another painting trip to Venice. Just us two. It was one of the most memorable times of my life as I learned who my father was as an artist in this incredible place on Earth. 💖
