When I think of my father, I see him surrounded in a world of colors and emotions, his brushstrokes capturing the essence of himself and life. His work is an explosion of expressive forms, influenced by his inner-self and formal art training, mixed with the likes of Dufy, Picasso, Matisse, and Cezanne.

But I also think of a proud American. Both my parents were that. They lived through an enormous life transition that, for many, is hard to imagine - as adults, in their 30s, with two children, escaping oppression, leaving everything behind and starting over in a new country.

And among his many works, this one stands out to me for those reason —a watercolor of the U.S. Capitol at the western entrance.

It captures a summer day with people strolling about the grounds of the Capitol, the U.S. flag gently fluttering in the breeze, and the sky painted a soft blue with delicate cirrus clouds. The colors my father used are bright and full of energy.

In 1979, Mom and Dad visited Washington D.C. with my older brother and his family. Dad was always inspired by new places, and this trip was no different. He brought his easel along, determined to capture the heart of the nation's capital.

The beauty of this painting lies in its simplicity and the depth of emotion it conveys. For our family, it’s a reminder of the incredible gift America was to us after escaping Communist Hungary in 1956. Mom and Dad were well aware of the importance of this place, and through this painting, I feel Dad was conveying respect and thanks to America for giving us the freedom we desperately sought after our ordeal.

On this day in 1979, Dad saw and painted what mattered most with The Capital. (the title is a play with spelling) ❤️
