Description
This work captures a painterly view of the New York City skyline from Maxwell Park near Frank Sinatra Drive in Hoboken, New Jersey. The Hoboken waterfront is known for its numerous public parks along the Hudson River, and Maxwell Park sits where the old Maxwell House Coffee company once stood.
Dad often painted from Hoboken, with some of his earliest works dating back to 1962. He would get there by subway and the path line. This particular piece, created in 2008, holds special significance. At 86 years old, Dad had recently moved in with my wife and me in Huntington, Long Island, after Mom passed away. On a warmer early February day, we drove together to find this beautiful spot at Maxwell Park.
The composition of this work is remarkable. Dad masterfully captured the juxtaposition of the tranquil Hudson River and the bustling city skyline as a ferry streams by. The subtle interplay of light on the distant city skyline, and that beautiful sky, along with his delicate brushstrokes, brings a sense of powerful reflection. You can almost feel the cool Hudson breeze and hear the distant hum of the city and the splash of the river on the passing ferry.

On this day in 2008, Mom was in heaven and Dad was doing his thing, From Maxwell Park.
