There is something big happening in this work—and it's also small.

One day, while looking at this piece together with Dad, I asked him what motivated his scenes.

"I am looking for contrasts. The big against the small. Brightness against darkness. Doers and watchers. Thinkers and sleepers. Straight and crooked.... Beauty lives in opposites."

I had no idea what he was saying. I lived in a world of sameness—where uniformity and conformity were valued over diversity.

Another decade or so passed until I understood his message—that the colorful, harmonious beauty of opposites defines our world.

It was right there before me all along—alive in all his art, and in this piece—but it took me about forty years to see it.

A View From The Hill. ❤️
