A big ball of energy called Happiness. That is what I feel lives in this painting.
Dad was at Gapstow Bridge in Central Park. Spring. 1964. A mother and her two children. The children wave at Dad as he paints. That fleeting moment, which moved Dad's heart, immortalized in a brushstroke. That's magic.
Dad loved children. Their innocence. Their honest joy. And when he saw children — no matter where, he felt their happiness, not just with his eyes, but somewhere deeper. And he put it all on paper. Dad was a child throughout his life.
I was five years old, but years later, when I looked at this work, I found him living inside of it. That big ball of happiness was staring back at me, powerful and alive. I could look it a thousand times, and still feel it.
For me, this is not a painting of a bridge nor a painting of a moment. It is a work of Heart.
