Description
This piece captures an idyllic scene in Central Park, New York City, where rowers glide gracefully across The Lake.
It's an early summer day, the trees in full bloom, but still a fresh green, their reflections dancing on the water. The rowboats, some adorned with colorful balloons, carry couples and singles alike, all enjoying the serenity of the moment. To the right, a stone bridge stands as a silent guardian, arching over the water.
This work brings back memories of the 1960s when we lived in uptown Manhattan, in an area known as Spanish Harlem. We were a humble immigrant family, having arrived in the United States in 1956. Despite our modest means, Dad found solace and inspiration in the beauty of Central Park. He would often escape to the park, where he could draw and paint, immersing himself in the natural splendor and capturing scenes like this one.
Looking at this piece, I imagine the lone rower in the foreground might be Dad, metaphorically navigating his own journey through his art.
The joyful atmosphere, the blooming trees, and the gentle ripples of the paddle waves all reflect his deep love for these simple yet profound moments of happiness.
On this day, he found a wonderful spot with a perfect view that will surely bring back joyful memories.
