Dad always had a deep affection for Central Park, a place he often visited to paint, draw, and enjoy time with his family.
This piece captures a vibrant scene at the Wollman Skating Rink on a late fall day. The nearly bare trees frame the rink, where skaters glide across the ice. In the background, the 5th Avenue skyline rises, adding a touch of the city’s grandeur to the scene.
The park, especially the upper east side, was one of Dad’s favorite spots. His ability to bring the lively spirit of the park to life in his work always fills me with admiration and nostalgia. This piece, with its skaters and colorful backdrop, is a beautiful reminder of his love for capturing the essence of the contrasts of New York City.
In 2005, this wonderful piece was licensed by CityMeals-On-Wheels - a New York City charity organization delivering a lifeline of food and human company to the homebound - for a 5x7 inch holiday card with a total distribution of 25,000. Each card sold by CityMeals-On-Wheels was used to deliver a holiday meal to needy individuals.
Created in the early winter of 1964, Dad reflects the extraordinary beauty of this wonderful spot with the contrast of the Wollman Rink, teaming with skaters, in a colorful interpretation of Opening Day. ❤️
