PARK BUGGY

by Laszlo Tar

Watercolor - 1964
Cat# 20001089/1964

Description

This piece captures a vibrant autumn day in Central Park, New York City.

The scene is bustling with life as horse-drawn carriages make their way along the path, carrying passengers who are likely soaking in the crisp, golden-hued scenery. Nearby, figures stroll and enjoy the park, adding a sense of community and warmth to the painting. The trees are dressed in their autumn best, with rich shades of gold, orange, and red creating a striking contrast against the blue sky.

In the background, the iconic 59th Street skyline is unmistakable, with the Pierre Hotel standing proudly with its distinctive patina-colored roof. This familiar landmark in many of Dad's Central Park paintings anchors the scene, blending the natural beauty of the park with the grandeur of the cityscape.

Dad, a graduate of the Budapest Royal Academy of Fine Arts (1943-1948) had a remarkable ability to infuse his European classical training with the expressive, vibrant styles of artists he admired, such as Dufy, Picasso, and Matisse. Having fled Communist Hungary with our family in 1956, he brought a unique perspective to his work, blending the old world with the new.

This work is wonderful evidence of his love for capturing moments of everyday beauty and joy. His impressionistic style, with bold strokes and lively colors, invites viewers to feel the crispness of the autumn air and the cheerful energy of Central Park. It’s a celebration of life's simple pleasures, seen through the eyes of a man who found solace and inspiration in the world around him.

So hop aboard! Take a ride back in time, through the eyes and heart of my father, Laszlo Tar, and Park Buggy. ❤️
