The scene is the North Meadow Ballfield located in Central Park, New York City.
I wouldn't say Dad knew anything about baseball - he definitely didn't - especially since arriving in America just a few years prior in 1956 - but Dad knew everything about people having fun and he knew that when they were focused on anything, it was the perfect moment of human expression, which he could feel and wanted to capture in his art.
At the Ball Game
In 2014, we had a family outing at Citi Field, in Queens New York, to watch a Mets game. My nephew, Anthony, set it up as a Mother's Day gift for the family. It was a great time, and I remember at about the 7th inning, Dad turned to me and said, "When are they going to start playing?" 🙂 No, I wouldn't say Dad knew much about baseball. ❤️ - And that's part of what makes this work of art so perfect. Dad knew nothing about baseball, but he got the game exactly right in this painting!
Dad loved painting and drawing in Central Park. He would go there often alone, and we would go there as a family, but when he was alone, he was on a creative mission to explore and find his spot of expressive reflection of the human spirit, in some form.
On this day, he found that human spirit in a baseball game that was in full motion - and it looks like there were at least THREE games in his view (if you look closely). He froze it all in time and reflected it back to us in this artistic moment of Play Ball! ⚾
