Throughout his long life, Dad loved painting scenes from Central Park, New York City. One of his favorite spots was The Big Lake, just west of the Bow Bridge. In this expressive watercolor, he captured the vibrant atmosphere of a warm, late-spring day.

The painting shows The Big Lake, with its shimmering waters reflecting the bright green trees lining the shores. People are strolling along the pathways, and rowboats mingle across the lake's surface. In the distance, the iconic west-side skyline rises above the park's lush foliage.

Dad's style was heavily influenced by the French painter Raoul Dufy, known for his colorful, semi-abstract works. Like Dufy, Dad used bold brushstrokes and a vivid palette to convey the energy and liveliness of his subjects.

As a formally trained artist who studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Budapest during the 1940s, Dad had a deep understanding of technique and composition. Yet, he embedded his paintings with a sense of spontaneity and joy, capturing the essence of a moment with his unique artistic vision.

After escaping Hungary with our family in 1956, Dad found a new home in New York City. Central Park and New York City became his muse, a place where he could explore and find inspiration for his art. He would often go there alone, seeking out spots like The Big Lake to reflect and paint.

Dad's love for art never wavered, and he continued creating until his final work in around 2018, at the remarkable age of 97. This painting of The Big Lake is a testament to his enduring passion and talent, a vibrant, free celebration of one of New York's most iconic landscapes.

On this day in 1991, Dad found The Big Lake. ❤️
