This watercolor painting depicts a weekend horse carriage ride through Central Park, in New York City, on an early fall day.
The leaves on the trees are beginning to turn a fiery orange and brunt red, their colors blending with the soft gray of the sky. In the distance, the 59th Street skyline stretches across the horizon, the famous Pierre Hotel with its patina-green roof standing proudly to the left.
Dad always had a knack for bringing out the character in buildings, making them feel like old friends in the background of his work.
The foreground is a lively tapestry of autumn colors and activity, where runners, bikers, adults and children move and stand along the park’s bike path. And at the heart of the painting is the main character - a horse carriage in motion.
The entirety of this work is a recreation of motion and emotion with simple grace.
Every time I look at Dad's Central Park collection I feel a deep sense of awe, knowing that he lives in every painting and drawing - each stroke, a piece of his soul. Indeed, his art is a window into how he felt and what he cherished, and through his vision, I learn to see the world with more color and emotion.
It’s a reminder that art, like life, can be filled with moments of simple beauty and profound connection.
Take a ride back in time to 1964, through the eyes and heart of my father, Laszlo Tar, and The Carriage Ride. ❤️
