This watercolor captures a beautiful winter scene from the east side of Central Park, New York City, the grand Pierre Hotel with its patinated green roof standing sentry among the towering buildings along 59th Street. Each structure glows in the crisp winter sun, their warmth contrasting with the snowy hills of the park, with bare, twisting trees that line the foreground. And there, on the lower right, a solitary figure with his faithful canine companion takes in the tranquil beauty.
For Dad, Central Park was an endless wellspring of artistic inspiration, its changing seasons and moods fueling his creative drive regardless of the weather. The bitter cold of 1964 did little to deter him - in fact, that year saw a veritable explosion of his artistic output.
As I reflect on that prolific period, the reasons become clear. At just five years old, I had now started kindergarten, joining my older siblings in the classroom. With the house finally empty during the day, Dad, ever the devoted stay-at-home parent, was free to indulge his passion for outdoor painting.
From morning till afternoon, he would venture into Central Park and New York City's winding paths, his easel, paints. and brushes in tow, determined to capture the city's magic.
This winter scene, with its crisp details and warm, inviting tones, stands as a testament to the hours Dad spent braving the elements, his singular focus honed on translating the world around him into enduring works of art.
More than just a pretty landscape, this painting encapsulates a pivotal moment in our family's journey - a time when Dad could fully embrace his creative calling - full force -, fortified by the knowledge that his children were safe, learning, and thriving. And it's important to note that our Mom was the ultimate supporter of Dad's artistic life. She was the bread-winner - the true glue of the family - without whom we all would have certainly starved and been homeless.
On this day in 1964, Dad leaves his mark on a Winter Afternoon. ❤️
