This scene is of The Lake in historic Central Park, New York City, on an early winter day.
The first snow has just fallen. The exact location is just west of the Bow Bridge, with the famous San Remo apartment building in view. San Remo is one of New York's last grand apartment buildings from the pre-Depression era.

Dad loved painting in Central Park. At the time of this work, we lived in uptown Manhattan, so he would often go there alone to explore and find his perfect spot for reflection, no matter the weather.
He was a formally trained artist who arrived in America just 11 years before this painting, after escaping with our family from Communist Hungary in 1956. We settled in New York City and its many contrasts, both in terms of structure and humanity, deeply inspired Dad.
This winter watercolor composition captures Dad's expressionist style beautifully. The white snow with the different shades of brown of the underlay and bare trees against the westside skyline creates a striking balance. His brushstrokes bring out the beauty and calmness of the park, while also hinting at the bustling city beyond.
On this cold wintery day, in 1967, Dad captures the beauty of the moment in Winter Lake.
