Our family lived in New York City from around 1960, in a small apartment in Spanish Harlem, uptown Manhattan. By 1965, we had been in the United States for about nine years, having escaped Soviet Communism in Hungary. We were beginning to settle into our American dream, still at the start of a long journey.

Dad’s dedication to his art was unwavering, painting even in freezing temperatures. It's incredible to think about how watercolor paints react in the cold, often forming crystal patterns that remain as permanent evidence of freezing water. These tiny details, visible under magnification, add a unique and stunning texture to his work.

This piece is a testament to Dad's love for the city's scenic views, capturing not just the landscape but the everyday moments of its inhabitants. The tender scene of the mother and daughter walking in the snow evokes a sense of warmth and familial love, beautifully juxtaposed against the crisp, cold day.
