1965. After a snowstorm. East side of Manhattan near 42nd Street. What's now called Greenway.

Dad had six hours between us leaving for school and coming home. Six hours to find his spot, finish his work, and get back home.

He walked miles. Collected maps. Years later I found them stuffed in a Goya rice bag—the rice once our dinner.

Here in the cold, I feel his heat.

The mom, child, and dog coming forward—toward him—into his arms. The little girl looking up at him. The river and everything else heading in the other direction—away—into the past.

And before him is all he was and all he ever needed.
