THE ARMORY

by Laszlo Tar

Watercolor - 1966
Cat# 2534032/1966

Description

The scene is the old Squadron A Armory on Madison Avenue and 94th Street, designed by John R. Thomas in 1888-90 for Calvary Squadron A.

Dad would travel throughout New York City to find, paint, and draw the contrasting beauty of New York metropolitan life. For this one, he didn't need to travel far because we lived just a short distance from this location, from around 1961 to 1968, in an area called Spanish Harlem.

At the time of this work, we were in the United States for about 10 years, arriving in 1956 after escaping Communist Hungary. We were citizens now and well on our way to the "American Dream".

On this day in 1966, Dad found a veritable castle, sitting amid the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps, in The Armory 💖
