New York City is a melting pot of human diversity, and Washington Square Park has always been a special gathering spot for both locals and visitors.

On any given day, the park is alive with musicians, artists, kids, adults, lovers, and friends, enjoying life with energy and simple beauty.

Dad, a formally trained artist from the European school, loved Washington Square Park. I suppose it was partly because of that grand arch standing amid the harmonious mix of people who regularly gathered there. It may have reminded him of similar places throughout Europe and the world. But I feel it was also far more than that simple notion.

Dad emigrated to the United States from Hungary in 1956 after escaping with our family during the revolt against communism. We settled in New York City, where Dad found daily inspiration in the city's vibrant life and contrasting scenery. He often visited Washington Square Park alone, capturing its essence in his paintings and drawings. On weekends, we would often go there together as a family.

One of his favorite works was this watercolor of the park.

Indeed, through this painting (and even more so his many drawings), you can feel the lively atmosphere of humanity. Dad felt that and wanted to bring attention to it. Whether dancing, playing music, throwing a frisbee, skating about, or just quietly sitting, Dad strived to capture the essence of life in Washington Square Park.

This watercolor is more than just a picture; it's a glimpse into the heart of the city, of humanity, and a piece of Dad's American journey and life passion.

On this day in 1970, Dad immortalized Washington Square Park 💖
