THE FERRY

by Laszlo Tar

Watercolor - 1997
Cat# 0525028/1997

Description

The scene is Port Jefferson in Long Island, New York.

One of Long Island's many beautiful seaports, Port Jefferson, is a historic ship-building village. The village was the largest shipbuilding center in Long Island's Suffolk County in the 1800s, with four of every ten ships being built there.

The ferry line has been in continuous operation since 1883 and is one of the wonderful attractions of Port Jefferson. Like a no-frills cruise ship, going back and forth to Connecticut, it is a key part of the commerce and beauty of Long Island.

Dad loved painting throughout the northern shores of Long Island. He and I would travel from harbor to harbor, to finding unique scenes for him to paint. Each journey was, for me, a venture into the mind and soul of my artist-Dad, who saw life simply and beautifully.

On this summer day in 1997, we found a special place in Port Jefferson, with The Ferry.  ❤️
