This piece portrays a whimsical hobo figure, smoking a cigar and staring in a stunned fashion at the artist.
The character wears a black top-hat and matching suit jacket, his expression capturing a blend of surprise and curiosity. The background is a rich golden yellow, filled with dynamic brushstrokes that add a sense of movement and warmth to the scene.
Inspired by a popular television comedian character that our family adored, this work holds a special place in my heart.
Dad created this painting for us (his children), and it hung for many years in the bedroom my brother and I shared, a constant reminder of how much he loved us.
When Dad arrived in America in 1956, he was still primarily working with oils. However, living in a small New York City apartment meant that the strong smells and space requirements of oil paints were challenging. As a result, this piece is part of a smaller collection of oil paintings he created in the United States. It reflects not only his artistic skill but also his ability to adapt and find beauty in any medium.
In 1960, Dad was 38 years old. His American journey as an artist was just beginning. He caught inspiration from wherever he could find it. His English was not very good, but he understood this comedian perfectly, in The Freeloader. ❤️
