Dad was a classical European artist who loved to paint flowers.
He would often set up his easel in our living room and paint cuttings from Mom's beautiful English garden. Throughout the spring and summer, and often into the fall, the garden was filled with many pretty specimens of different colors and shapes. Dad used these as his painting models.
This is one of my favorite of his flower paintings - a bold, colorful watercolor. I remember arranging this particular bouquet myself, placing the flowers spread out in a classic white Italian vase. The bouquet had big pink peonies, bright yellow mums, cheerful daisies, red carnations, and delicate baby's breath.
In the background, Dad placed a medium blue drape and, under the vase, he included a smooth pale-green cloth. He positioned the flowers just right - in the center, as the main focus.
Dad was 76 years old when he created this beautiful floral painting. He took great care with the composition to make it just perfect.
Painting flowers was one of Dad's favorite subjects because he felt they represented the beauty of God's natural creations.
Whenever I look at this watercolor, I'm reminded of Dad's talent and his love of creation and art. To me, it also captures the spirit of our family home and Mom's wonderful garden that provided endless inspiration.
On this summer day in 1998, Dad created Flowers. ❤️
