THE ARTIST'S STUDIO

Welcome to my special place. This was my art studio, my place of creativity and, in many ways, my place of worship.

If you have already visited my gallery, you have probably noted that I prefer to create my original art on location. I believe that my art needs to be a direct interpretation of not only what I see at the moment but also what I am feeling in the environment where I work - the air, the sun, people, humanity, nature - all together, complete.

All my art is a mixture of what I see and my inner thoughts, feelings, and impressions. Rarely will I make major adjustments to my work after the initial creation. The watercolor medium inherently makes that difficult anyway, which is one reason I love it and feel it is the perfect creative painting method. I have practiced this philosophy throughout my life.

The only work that I create and complete in my studio are my still-lifes and portraits. As you can tell, I love painting flowers tremendously. There is something quite magical yet so natural about them - all of nature wrapped up in a tight little package, so powerfully colorful and competitively contrasting, yet so delicate and harmonizing. I also love drawing the human figure. That has always been an important part of who I am as an artist.

Painting on location.

So what's it like in my studio? Well, it's probably about what you might expect. I have a secluded room with a simple easel panel, paint palettes, works completed and those in progress all around me. I also like to work in our living room, with my wife present. I do what little work is required to complete my landscape, drawings, and still-lifes in my studio. Here, amid my collection of art and many favorite art books, and in the ready company of my wife, Olga, I am at peace with my work and myself.

I usually listen to soft classical music when I work, but I need very little to enter my artistic state of mind - I am there always, and always have been!

Thank you for visiting.
